10 Ways to Boost Online Sales

By R.O.B On April 13, 2010 Under Making Money Online, Running Online Business

Looking to increase the sales of your eCommerce website? Whether you sell computers or children’s toys, here are ten effective ways to boost your online sales and subsequent profits:

Consider affiliate marketing. An affiliate website will display an online ad for your site and you pay the affiliate a commission (typically a flat or percentage-based rate for each purchase made). The upside to affiliate marketing is you generally do not pay anything unless a sale or transactions takes place, which means you don’t lose any money.

Make your website user-friendly. Websites that have complex navigation, broken links, or poor design tend to have a higher rate of abandoned shopping carts. This is because many potential customers become frustrated with the cumbersome site and will leave to shop elsewhere.

Write unique product descriptions as opposed to using the manufacturer’s generic descriptions. This can not only help with your search engine rankings, it is also more enticing to customers. Make sure you use relevant keywords and keep the description clear and concise.

Be sure to include pictures that clearly show the product from a wide range of different angles.

Avoid making customers sign up for an account prior to making a purchase; offer an opt-out option that allows them to make a purchase without having to disclose their email address and sign up for an account.

Make sure your contact information (including a legitimate phone number) is highly visible on the website; this builds confidence and trust in your site among prospective customers.

Offer a wide range of payment services. While credit cards are the most popular payment method in the U.S., some consumers prefer other forms of payments, especially in other countries (if you are selling internationally).

Provide (real!) testimonials from satisfied customers and allow customers to post reviews of products. Again, this builds trust in your website and visitors are more inclined to make purchases from websites they deem trustworthy.

Use SEO software to implement an internet marketing strategy that boosts your online rankings and visibility on the web. Most SEO software programs are designed for small business owners who have no previous experience or knowledge of SEO or internet marketing practices.

Clearly detail and make visible all of the store policies, including return and exchange policies, the terms of service of the site, and your privacy policy ensuring customers that you do not disclose their information to unauthorized third parties.
